Learn More About Freezer Labels
A freezer label is not an ordinary label on colder stock. The adhesive, the facestock and the temperature you apply it at are all different — and any one of the three will lose you the label if you get it wrong.
Every label is a promise that the pack can still be identified when somebody picks it up. In a freezer that promise is under attack from three directions at once: the adhesive is being asked to grab a surface that is already below freezing, the facestock is sitting in permanent condensation, and the whole thing is cycled between cold and warm every time the door opens. An ordinary pressure-sensitive label loses that fight — usually not on day one, which is what makes it expensive.

The three things that decide it
1. The adhesive, and the temperature you apply it at
This is the one people get wrong. A freezer-grade adhesive is not just an adhesive that survives the cold — it is one that will still form a bond on a surface that is already frozen. Ours applies down to −20 °F. A standard permanent adhesive needs a warm, dry surface; put it on a frozen box and it never keys at all, and the label is on the floor by the time the pallet is wrapped. 2. The facestock
Paper drinks. In a freezer there is always water — frost on the way in, condensation on the way out — and paper wicks it, swells and cockles, and the print goes with it. Synthetic facestock (BOPP, polyester, vinyl) takes on nothing, so the label that goes in is the label that comes out. See polyester and BOPP labels, or choose your material & sizing.
3. How far down the cold goes
Freezer and deep-freeze are one problem; liquid nitrogen is another. Below roughly −80 °C you are into cryogenic labels, which is a different stock and a different adhesive again. Tell us the coldest temperature the pack will ever see, not the average — the label is specified for the worst case.
Getting it right the first time
- Dry the pack. Wipe off frost and melt-water with a terry cloth before you apply. Even a freezer adhesive cannot key through a film of water.
- Press it down properly. These are pressure-sensitive labels — they need real pressure across the whole label, not a tap in the middle.
- Give it dwell time. 12–24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully before the pack takes rough handling.
- Keep copy off the seam on wrap-arounds, and off the corners, which are the first thing a glove catches. See applying labels by hand.
- Test before you commit. Order free samples and put them in your own freezer, on your own packaging, for a week. It costs nothing and settles the argument.
What a freezer label is actually for
Freezing is the simplest way there is to make food last, but a freezer is also the easiest place in the building to lose track of what you have. Everything goes opaque, everything goes the same colour, and six weeks later nobody can tell the chicken stock from the chilli. A freezer label is what turns a stack of anonymous containers back into an inventory: it says what is inside, when it went in, and how long it has left. That is worth having whether the freezer is a chest in a kitchen or a walk-in behind a production line.
Done properly it does three jobs at once. It makes the pack findable, so nobody digs through the whole shelf looking for one thing. It makes the age of the pack obvious, and storage times differ a lot between one food and another. And it stops waste, because you can see at a glance what needs using first instead of throwing out something that quietly went past its date.
What to put on the label
- What it is. The name of the contents, written so it still reads at arm’s length through a frosted bag.
- The date it was frozen — the single most useful thing on the label, and the one most often left off. Without it there is no way to tell whether the pack is a fortnight or a year old.
- Quantity or portion count, so the pack can be planned around without opening it.
- Anything the next person needs to know: reheating or cooking instructions, allergens, a lot number — whatever your process or your regulator requires.
Using them well
- Write with a permanent marker or a freezer pen. Ordinary ballpoint and water-based ink smear or fade the moment there is condensation on the label.
- Put the label on the front face, where it can be read without lifting the pack out.
- Press it down firmly and check the edges — a label that is only half attached is the one that ends up on the freezer floor.
- Use different colours or shapes to separate categories, or to code how long something has been in — it turns a stock check into a glance.
- Go through the freezer on a schedule and pull anything past its storage time or showing freezer burn. The labels are what make that a five-minute job.
